Our Activities

eBound is the owner and administrator of University Press Library Open (www.uplopen.com), an ambitious effort to accelerate open access eBook publishing among university presses. UPLOpen offers a single access point to a curated collection of exclusively open access monographs, all peer-reviewed works from university presses and other distinguished academic publishers. Many of the books tackle themes of global importance—from social justice and the eradication of poverty to climate change and sustainable development. A badging system helps readers easily discover books that are relevant to any of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Awards & Grants

Since 2022, De Gruyter Brill eBound has awarded grants totaling over $200,000 to support a variety of efforts.

SUPRR is an initiative bringing support to Ukrainian publishing during these difficult times. Through open-access publishing, it aims to deliver on the educational, academic, and cultural needs of Ukrainians.

Duke University Press created an initiative called “Accessing Scholarship in the Global South” to support authors from underfunded institutions, independent scholars, and contingent faculty whose work might not otherwise be eligible for OA funding.

WPI Press seeks to align with the university’s mission to advance STEM fields and confront global challenges by leveraging the range of global knowledge that crosses cultural, environmental, technological, and social systems to support the dignity, self-sufficiency, and sustainability of people and the planet.

In 2025, eBound gave out grants totaling several hundred thousand dollars to partner publishers to publish Open Access books, including $100K that went specifically to support the publication of 13 books on climate change.

Beth Mardutho: The Syriac Institute promotes the study and preservation of the Syriac heritage and language, and facilitates opportunities for people to pursue the study of this ancient legacy globally.
